Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a major awards ceremony approaches, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

Another commentator made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, however the design of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
